Compass Customs started the way most of these shops do — a table that needed building, and a stubborn idea that the finish could carry as much weight as the joinery. Most furniture treats stain as an afterthought, something you pick to match a room. Here it's the opposite: the wood grain is the canvas, and the stain work is where the actual design happens.

Every piece is a commission, built one at a time, start to finish, by hand. No two boards take stain the same way, so no two pieces come out alike — that's treated as a feature of the process, not a flaw to engineer around. Builds get filmed from raw lumber to final coat, so the piece that ends up in your home comes with the record of how it got there.

The name is a nod to that process — every build starts without a fixed map, finding the design as the grain and the stain reveal it, one layer at a time.
